CHAPTER 13

‘That must be her,’ Amelia said and reached for her phone.

‘What are you going to do?’ Ryan asked. ‘Look for the marriage certificate?’

‘No, never crossed my mind. I’ll leave it to you and your colleagues, if that's of any relevance. I'll just find her. Now I've got her name I can browse through Rayna’s connections.’

‘But why?’

‘To see where she is and what she is doing, and if she by any chance had any business visiting her ex-husband in his little cabin in the woods.’

‘I see you’ve got your main suspect,’ Ryan said, walking back to the table and grabbing two biscuits from the plate.

‘I do. And you?’ Amelia scrolled through her former colleague’s connections.

‘Hm… I’m not a fan of our mountain bike lover. He’s a little too shady and too smart technically. And we still don’t know if what his real reason for staying with the victim was. I can see the logic in your thinking, particularly since the only things that seem to have gone missing from the cabin were the photos and whatever was taken from under the bed.’

‘A foldable bike,’ Amelia reminded, very shortly, for she had just found the person she had been looking for.

‘Very likely but not yet confirmed. I agree, it would make sense to say whoever was at the cabin, shot the victim, stole his fancy foldable bike, ran away and dump the bike. But that third bike, Mr Diabolo was talking about throws me off.’

‘Maybe she came on that bike and returned on the one she found under the bed,’ Amelia said, scrolling through the description. She had a feeling something was not quite right with Ryan, but she couldn’t quite specify it, and her attention was entirely taken up by the content of what she was reading.

‘Could be, but why?’ Ryan asked. ‘Why not returning on her own bike?’

‘Because someone has stolen it.’

‘But who could have done it? The victim was dead.’

‘A shady character with a flair for fancy bikes,’ Amelia stated and lifted her eyes at Ryan. He had a puzzled look on his face.

‘Ah-ah-aha,’ he stuttered. ‘You think he was there.’

‘He had mentioned that he had heard a shot-like noise and then retracted it, right? If he was there, he had to get away somehow, but not with his bike, since we found it hidden in the bushes in the morning, and it only disappeared later. You’ve said it yourself: he is a shady character. Having said that, I had him earmarked as the folding bike thief,’ she admitted with a slight sigh. ‘Because he’s a vagabond, distrustful prepper and the bike seems to be perfect for a vagabond, distrustful prepper. And here I’ve got someone who doesn’t look like a prepper, but I’d like you to have a look.’

He walked up to her.

‘You’d like me to have a look at a person who doesn’t look like a prepper?’ he asked, sitting opposite her.

‘I won’t comment on her looks, however, I will allow myself to let out an expression of admiration.
